Review
Praise for Damon Ferrante's Guitar Books and Music: "Damon is an extraordinary composer, but he is also a shredder. I have had some very revealing conversations with him about his secrets. This book ["Guitar Scales Handbook"] now makes Damon's experience available to any and all. It covers the basics and then goes on to a unique approach to advanced scales." William Anderson, Music Professor and Professional Guitarist"Only a writer with decades of experience as performer, composer, and teacher could produce "Guitar Adventures." Damon Ferrante has distilled a lifetime of thinking about music into the fundamental building blocks of musicianship. He does more than show you around the fingerboard--Ferrante demonstrates how to think musically, about the guitar or any instrument." Robert Battistini, Professor and Music Writer"I really love this book! As a kid when I was first learning, the chord charts were often difficult to decipher and confusing. Damon's approach to this is so much more direct and easy to grasp. This all translates really well for any guitar player, whether it be a beginner who's getting used to the instrument or a more advanced player. Damon's videos are excellent, too. This is just an excellent tool to have on you as a player. It's comprehensive, detailed, and all-in-all, really fun!" Sean Kelly, Guitarist for A Fragile Tomorrow The Baltimore Sun calls Ferrante's music "focused and colorful...with an unexpected, decidedly poetic touch" and "ebullient and full of shifts of direction." "Damon Ferrante has written a clear and comprehensive book about scales ["Guitar Scales Handbook"]. I know him as an accomplished composer and guitarist, and this book is a wonderful step by step guide to scales and their application. Helpful for the beginner or advanced guitarist. Oren Fader, Music Professor and Professional Guitarist

As a guitarist and guitar teacher, for over 25 years, I was always looking for a book that would teach scales and the music theory behind them in a fun, useful and musical format. Guitar Teacher, who is looking for material to teach your students about scales, music theory, the notes of the guitar neck, fretboard theory, technique, and improvising / building guitar solos. Teacher, who would like to play the guitar in the classroom and improve your technique, creativity, and understanding of the guitar. This book is THE worst guitar book I own. In fact, it's the worst guitar book I've ever read. The author talks in the beginning about how horrible most guitar books are:"In the past, most books on guitar scales and technique have taken a dull and uninspiring approach. Much of the time these books just throw together a lot of scales and techniques in a random, boring and confusing way; sometimes these books are no better than blurry photocopies."The book then does EXACTLY that. You can't flip to any of the "Great Guitar Concepts and Techniques" he promises because only the scales have a table of contents. Looking through the book (to find the techniques I'm interested in) it is impossible to find ANY technique advice as this book is just a bunch of scales and weak advice thrown together randomly. There isn't a single picture of a hand holding a guitar to demonstrate any techniques, just one bad photocopy of a picture of a guitar. And there isn't a progression of technique as the author promises, just a hodgepodge of ideas with no overarching theme. Excuse me, there is one theme. "This book isn't like other books." That's right, Damon. It stands apart. But just because something is unique, doesn't make it useful. This book has only one use: It serves as an excellent example of how NOT to write a book about guitar.
I don't have much of a music background, so I didn't want anything overly complex. This book turned out to be good for a beginner like me. Of course, a person would benefit more from having interactive lessons with a professional, but not everyone has the time or money for that, so this book and the youtube videos that come along with it are the next best thing. The book describes things clearly and relatively simply. It's pretty concise too, which is nice. All in all I think this is a good book to use if you want to get into guitar music. I've gained some skill by following the lessons in it. Would recommend.
I am a self-taught guitarist and I took advantage of the promotion so I could get a glimpse at some actual technique! I like that each of the 100 lessons is one page. That makes it very easy to digest and go at my own pace. I've only had a chance to go through the first few lessons, but the bullet-pointed facts and lesson tips kept me inspired and interested. I also appreciated that the book skipped the overly simple introductory information. Although, I can see how someone who is just starting out could feel a little overwhelmed.I would have appreciated a little more color to make the pages pop, but the videos were extremely helpful and fun! The lesson videos allowed me to visualize what I had read on the page and the jam tracks made the monotonous act of practicing scales seem like a lot of fun! People of all ages can enjoy the lessons. I have already recommended this book to many of my musical friends and will definitely do it again!
I have a pretty extensive background in music. I have been singing for as long as I can remember in choirs and plays etc. I have also been playing the viola and the flute since elementary school! I have had numerous hours of training in reading and playing music. The guitar has always been an instrument that I have wanted to play. However, I am not one that can afford lessons... That being said, this book is PERFECT for someone like me. Even with my background as a musician, the detailed lessons are a great review for me as well as a clarification for some things. The book is easy to follow and the addition of picture visuals and video tutorials make it that much easier. My favorite addition is the play alongs at the end of the lesson that allow you to apply techniques and scale work. This is a great book and I am so excited to put it to great use!!
I used this as a refresher guide for scales I have not used in a while. It's laid out in a simple, easy to understand format that any level of player can understand. I only viewed a couple of the accompanying videos and they are about average for what you'd find on YouTube, but to a beginner they may helpful. My one recommendation to the author is to turn off the reverb on your future videos...it's annoying.
My last experience with an instrument was in middle and I've never truly played the guitar but I found the book easy to understand. The video lessons that are linked inside the digital book are informative and fun with the convenience of being right on the page where you should watch if you're following it through. I would definitely suggest this to music teachers and other beginners like me.
This is a good book for learning guitar scales. It is well laid out and has just about any scale you could want.It is geared more toward the electric guitar, with many scales that go way past the 12th fret.My biggest complaint is not from the content, but the book itself. It measures 6" x 9" and would be much easier to read while your holding a guitar if it was standard 8.75" x 11.75". Also the binding is great if I am just reading it. But getting it to stay open and lay flat with both hands on my guitar is not going to happen unless I break the back of the binding. It would be much nicer to have a bigger book and spiral bound - or in a 3 ring binder.
I choose this rating for this book because it was really easy to understand the different strings being taught to you. I really enjoying looking at this book, looking at all the different techniques and strings being played. Learning the different strings on the Guitar has taught me a lot. I wanna find more books that will help me out and show me different techniques. I thought after first it would be difficult learning where all the strings were but the book really helped me out. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn the guitar.
